About

1987

History

The club was formed in 1987 and despite being based in a small, rural market town with a secondary school of little more than 350 students, is an extremely high achieving club. We are extremely proud of the fact that we cater for all ages and all abilities and have a great group of dedicated volunteers who give their time to run such a successful club. In 2015 we were chosen as a priory club by England Hockey and since then have achieved the revised club accreditation - England Hockey Clubmark. CLICK HERE to see a full list of our committee members who help make all this possible.

England Hockey Clubmark Accreditation

Clubmark is the universally acknowledged cross sport accreditation scheme for community sports Clubs

  •  Higher standards of welfare, equity, coaching and management in community sports Clubs
  •  Making sure the nation’s sports Club infrastructure is safer, stronger and more successful
  •  An accredited Club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages as well as helping parents and carers know what that they’re choosing the right Club for their young people

Junior Development

Kirkby Stephen HC has a very strong relationship with local schools and offers a well structured junior section where juniors are supported throughout their development into senior hockey.

As a result of the relationships that have been built and the impressive structure, the club has a thriving junior section of over 100 children. The junior section is split into two age groups Primary school and Secondary School and all age groups compete in all available categories.

Junior groups are coached by qualified Coaches, all of whom are individually approved by England Hockey Board following a CRB check. These coaches are all volunteers, thus ensuring best value while also providing high quality coaching.

The club is a holder of the prestigious award from England Hockey & Sport England proving that we provide a 'safe, effective and child friendly hockey environment'

In most recent success in the 16/17 season our U10 Girls became Cumbria and the Borders Champions and semi finalists in the North of England In2 Hockey competition and our U12 Boys -became Champions from the Cumbria and Borders In2 Hockey Competition at Durham. Many junior players have risen through the ranks and gone on to represent their county and regional side which is encouraged, and indeed in one instance become a member of the England U21 squad.

In a survey conducted last year in all the local schools about participation in sport outside school, hockey came top, above even football.
