It was a blustery and wet start to the game but Kirkby Stephen knew how the typical Cumbrian weather worked on their side. It was an important game for Kirkby Stephen to secure 3 points in the fight to avoid relegation. Brooklands sit bottom but KS are having to fight in their last few games to ensure they stay in the North Premier Division.
With the determination and assurance of their ’12th player’, Kirkby Stephen managed to keep a clean sheet; with some tremendous saves from Sophie Winder (GK), and then clearances and breaks from Jenny Coates, Rachael Gowing, Vicki Capstick, Lucy Ewbank and Emma Thorpe. Throughout the whole game, the ball was distributed among the team, through the midfield (Heidi Maughan, Nicole Clegg, Julie Hope, Anna Pigney and Anthea Bowman), and placing it up front to the forwards (Lucy Potter, Ella Capstick and Amy Potter).
KS’s first goal came from a break won by Jenny Coates, playing the ball to Heidi Maughan, who played the ball down the line to Lucy Potter. Lucy ran and squared it into the D to Amy Potter, who was 1-on-1 with the keeper, and slipped the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal; 1-0.
Kirkby Stephen won a penalty corner, Nicole Clegg injected the ball to Julie Hope, who struck the ball and the keeper fortunately saved it, however, Amy Potter bagged her second by cleaning up the rebound on the back post; 2-0.
The third goal came from Heidi Maughan on the left side, taking on a defender and slipping the ball to Anna Pigney on the left post, who crossed the ball back to penalty spot and Amy Potter swept the ball into the backboard; 3-0.
Kirkby Stephen were elated with a 3-0 victory, and of course, Amy Potter was awarded man of the match for her tremendous movement on and off the ball, and scoring a superb hattrick!
Kirkby Stephen play away Sheffield Hallam Ladies 1s on Saturday 14th March.
