Kirkby Stephan ladies 1s made the journey down to Wimslow, Manchester in Storm Arwen for the top v bottom team clash in the North West Premier League. With poor travelling conditions the away team arrived with not much time to spare until the whistle blew for push back. Despite this Kirkby started the game at pace and within minutes midfielder Anthea Bowman found the backboard after a penalty corner routine. The positivity continued as Heidi Maughan made some great attacking moving down the left wing releasing the ball to bowman who found the goal again!
The quick start put Kirkby at ease, and they started to relax giving Wimslow the chance to advance up the pitch and after being awarded a penalty corner they managed to grab a goal back. Midfielders Sally Addison, Nicole Clegg and Julie Hope worked relentlessly hassling the ball but just before the half time whistle blew the home side managed to even up the score line 2-2.
A strong wording from superstar coach Janette Mchirter at half time did the trick and Kirkby began to play for each other and after great open play with forwards Lucy Potter and Anna Pigney playing the ball around the opposition they slipped it to Bowman who put it home to get her hattrick! Again it was another superb game from Kirkby’s number 1 goal keeper Sophie Winder who made some fabulous saves and alongside her defence Jessica Harrison, Vicki Capstick, Rachel Gowing and Jenny Coates kept Kirkby in the game. The game was also debut for youngster Martha Bainbridge who immediately made an impression up front forcing fouls from the opposition and nearly getting a goal herself. But it was Bowman’s day, and she managed to score her fourth and final of the day making the final score line 4-2. Special mention to Heidi Maughaun who received man of match. Kirkby Stephen Ladies 1s remain top of the table and look forward to taking on Deeside Ramblers at home next Saturday 1pm push back.
