About Our Junior Section

Here at Kirkby Stephen Hockey Club we have a thriving mini hockey and junior section, with over a hundred boys and girls from all over the Upper Eden Valley regularly attending training. The children are coached by qualified level 1 and 2 coaches and a team of young hockey volunteers.

All children are encouraged to come and play regardless of ability or experience, the mini section is for primary children in school years 1,2,3,4, and 5 and the junior section is available for older school children in year 6 through into secondary school age.

Regular mini hockey festivals are held on a monthly basis throughout the season with all children in years 3, 4 and 5 encouraged to take part in the u10 matches and children in years 6 and 7 taking part at u12 level.

U14 children also take part in monthly festivals throughout Cumbria and can take the form of boys, girls or mixed teams.

In February we run and host the England Hockey In2 u10 and u12 competitions at Kirkby Stephen, with many children having the opportunity to play hockey in a structured national competition. Over the last 10 years we have had many boys and girls teams become county champions, then progress through to Border champions and then attend the North of England In2 championships in Leeds a fantastic opportunity to play hockey at a high standard.

Talented children are also identified and encouraged to attend Cumbria Junior Academy coaching sessions and be selected to represent Cumbria in North of England County tournaments. From these the best are selected to attend Junior Regional Performance Centres and receive elite training as part of England Hockey national development pathway.
